March 23 is observed as the Shaheed Diwas or Martys Day or Sarvodaya day. This day is marked to pay the tribute to our freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar.

Three of them were hanged to death by the British on March 23, 1931 as the result of their protest the Freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai’s death by the English men.

Lala Lajpat Rai, the Punjab Kesari of India who played a key role for the Independence of the country were injured during the Simon Commission. Unfortunately, he was never recovered from the injuries and took his breath on November 17,1928.

This forced Bhagat Singh along with the Sukhdev Thapar, Shivaram Rajguru and Chandrashekhar Azad to take the revenge by killing the Superintendent of the police James A Scott, who ordered Lathi charge on Rai.

On December 1928, Rajguru and Bhagat singh mistakenly shot John P Saunders, an Assistant Superintendent of the police. Afterwards, they were out of the reach for several months.

To protest the public safety Bill and Trade Dispute Act, Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt in April 1929, exploded a bomb in the Central Legislative Assembly in Delhi. However, Singh was arrested by shouting the slogan ‘Inquilab Zindabad’ afterwards.

As the time pass, Sukhdev was also arrested with disclosure of the bomb factory in Lahore and Saharanpur.

Bhagat singh joined his inmates Jatin Das in a hunger strike demanding better conditions for the prision. The protest ultimately led to the death of the Das frm the starvation in September 1929.

Later on, Sukhdev and Rajguru was sentenced to death related to the different case registered against them by the British. The same is known as the Lahore conspiracy case.
