Ram Rahim Singh’s sentencing today, Haryana Shuts Down

The controversial Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was found guilty of raping two followers on Friday, 25th August, 2017. The self-styled guru was declared guilty of rape and criminal intimidation of two women followers by CBI special court judge Jagdeep Singh.

As soon as Ram Rahim was announced guilty for rape, thousands of his followers started harming public properties, burning cars and buses, some of the government offices were also vandalized. The media personnel and their satellite vans were also targeted by Mr. Singh’s followers in parts of Haryana. 38 people have died and properties worth crores was destroyed in Panchkula after the verdict was announced.

The judge will be flown to Rohtak to check violence ordered the Punjab & Haryana High Court. 900 plus people have been arrested in Haryana till now.

“Anyone creating trouble will be given a warning first and if he still pays no heed, then he will have to face the bullet,” told Atul Kumar, the Deputy Commissioner of Rohtak to reporters.


Ram Rahim is lodged in Rohtak jail since Friday. Around 3,000 paramilitary troops have been assigned on the outskirts of the jail. All access to the jail has been blocked.

Schools and colleges are closed in Haryana and some schools are also closed in Punjab, Ghaziabad and Noida. Mobile internet will also remain suspended in Haryana till Tuesday. No traffic restrictions in Delhi and all schools are open. The police released an advisory to parents to stay away from rumors on social media.

Around 30,000 followers of the Dera chief Ram Rahim were cleared out of the Dera base spread over 1,000 acres in Sirsa. The followers were taken out of the premises yesterday in state transport buses as they refused to move out of the Dera. Hundreds of soldiers and policemen have blocked all approaches of the Dera Base.

The police seized two Ak-47, a pistol, rods, sticks and other materials used to make petrol bombs in search at more than 130 Dera campuses.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said: “Those who take law in their hands or take to violence will not be spared, whoever they are.”

Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh will be sentenced today at 2.30 pm in a special jail in Rohtak. A special court session is arranged inside the jail as per security reasons.
