Nation remembers Major Dhyan Chand on National Sports Day

When it comes to Hockey, the only name known by the present as well as past 40 decades generation is Major Dhyan Chand who is known to rule the field for over 20 years and marked splendid 400 goals. He is well known as “The Wizard” of hockey.

Born in a family of hockey player, Dhyan Chand follow the footsteps oh his father who played for the British Army. He used to play hockey in the moonlight often as a result of which his friends and colleagues started calling him ‘chand’ (Moon) and transform his name from Dhyan singh to Dhyan chand.

Major Dhyan Chand is the most celebrated players in the history of sports due to his record-breaking performance in Hockey. He made India proud by winning three Olympic medals at 1928, 1932 and 1936.

In 1956, Dhyan Chand was honoured with Padma Bhushan by the Indian Government and later on by Bharat Ratna.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to twitter and remembered the legendary player by saying that, “Greetings to all sports enthusiasts on National sports day. Tributes to the phenomenal hockey player, Major Dhyan Chand ji on his birth anniversary. I urge people to give priority to sports and fitness related activities, which will contribute towards a healthier India”.

Union Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore also pays tribute to the Wizard of hockey and said, “Let us give tributes to one of the country’s greatest sports icons by inculcating sports as part of their lifestyles”.

Even after the retirement, Major Dhyan Chand did not give up on Hockey and became the chief coach at the National Institute of Sports in Patiala and later on assist many coaching camps at Rajasthan.

Every year on National sports Day, President Of India gives all major sports awards like Arjuna Award, Dronacharya Award, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award to recognize splendid performance by the sportspersons and their coaches.
