Mahathir Mohamad have finally ended the six-decade rule of the former Prime Minister Najib Razak in his late 90’s thus becoming the oldest elected PM in the world. In the Malaysia’s general election, Mahathir Mohamad won the 113 out of 222 parliamentary seats.
The official result shows that Mahathir Mohamad’s party Pakatan Harapan clinched the majority votes while the opposition party Barisan Nasional occupied 79 seats only. The official sworn in ceremony of the new Malaysian PM will took place on Thursday.
The family members of Mahathir feel stumbled as well as excited at his winning. Mahathir’s daughter Marina Mahathir said, “It seemed so difficult, impossible. I didn’t dare think even though I was out there, and I saw the crowds. He is a veteran, he knows how to do this”.
Mahathir Mohamad was a former doctor who entered in the politics in 1964 and later on ruled the Malaysia for 22 years from 1981 to 2003. During his rule, the country shows a major transformation from being a sleepy southeast Asian backwater to relatively affluent country.
In 1981, he holds the position of the UMNO’s deputy leader as well as Prime Minister. Later on, with his outstanding work, he was popularly known as the champion of the country’s muslim malay majority and the father of modern Malaysia that helped the economic growth.
By winning the present election, Mahathir denied all the allegation of taking the revenge from the opposition and wish to restore the law again.
He said, “we are not seeking revenge. What we want to do is to restore the rule of law. We are going to accept the will of the people. Whatever it is, we need to respect the will of the people”.After coming to power Mahathir Mohamad ordered all the government officials to do what is right according to the constitution and the laws of his country.
