Six institute including IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, Indian Institute of science (IISc), BITS- Pilani, Manipal Academy of High Education and Jio Institute were awarded Institution of Eminence (IoE) by HRD ministry on Monday. Government had earlier faced criticism for including Jio Institute in the government IOE list for which they have given the explanation that coveted tag to Jio was given under greenfield category.
The institutions included in the IoE list raises many questions even on the social media platform asking the HRD ministry about the Jio institute location and credentials.
A professor from IISc-Bangalore said, “How did Prakash Javdekar evaluate this Jio institute to decide it was better than IIT M or IIT KGP or so many other institutions? How can an institution that is in process of being set up be declared institution of eminence? What are we missing here?”
While JNU Ayesha Kidwai said, “The Jio institute is yet to be established but will already be marketed as a world class institution by the government. Can’t we see the conflict of interest”.
However, UGC defended Jio Institute inclusion by saying that it was selected under rules of greenfield institutions and 11 such institutions had applied for the IoE tag and Jio was among them.
The government will provide financial assistance of Rs 1,000 crore to the 10 government institutions to achieve world-class status and this assistance will not be provided to the private sectors.
