Karti Chidambaram, son of former finance minister P.Chidambaram is taken to CBI custody on INX media case followed by the order of special court on Thursday till March 6. The court says that the case is at an initial stage and requires further investigation.
After a three hour of serious arguments between karti’s lawyer and CBI counsel who requested for 14 days custody saying that he needed to be questioned thoroughly “in serious finance corruption case”. The order was given by the CBI judge Sunil Rana.
In a nine-page order Judge says, “ In view of the submissions made and the fact that the matter is at the initial stage of investigation, which is a very crucial stage and further as per the case diary and day-to-day report of the investigation, the claim of the CBI is based on the ground that there is a first sight evidence showing the involvement of accused and it requires further investigation”.
The Judge added, “In view of the facts and circumstances of the case, I am of the view that the police custody of the accused is necessary to confront Karti with documents, co-accused and to reveal the large conspiracy and part of other accused involved in this case”.
Thus, with final decision of the day, the Judge grant 5 days custody to the CBI.
The investigation officer gives the permission for medical examination every 24 hours during the custody. Karti also gets the liberty for seeking assistance of his counsel during the remand period.
Karti urged for the home-cooked food but the court disallowed. However, he could take the medicines.
The INX media received an excess amount of Rs 300.7 crore along with foreign investment of Rs 300 crore from August 22, 2007 to May 2008.
Tushar Mehta, Additional Solicitor General (ASG) explained on the whole night stay of Karti in the cardiac unit of Safdarjung hospital by saying that,
“He was only questioned for a few hours. It is amazing that despite no history of Cardiac problem, doctors advised him to be in the CCU”.
