After the announcement of the resignation, Gambhir said that the decision was taken without any pressure and it was the right time to step down.
He said, “It is my decision. I have not performed enough and owe the responsibility as the leader. I believe this is the right time to step down as there is still a lot of time in the tournament. The management didn’t pressurise at all”.

He has not always been destructive for the team as he got the two IPL titles in his pocket and score all over 3035 runs in the IPL matches. He once led Delhi team in 2010 and making it to be in fifth place finishbut after the poor team performance, he steps back.
After taking over the charge of captaincy, Shreyas Iyer first applauded Gautam Gambhir for taking the team ahead of him and later thanked the management for giving the opportunity.
He said, “Respect Gambhir for putting team ahead of himself. I fully endorse Iyer as captain and I want to thank the management and my coaches for appointing me as the captain of the team. It is a great honour for me”.
