Stopping all the speculations of renaming the UP’s historic city Allahabad, UP Cabinet gives a final nod on Tuesday to call the city as Prayagraj now.
Sidharth Nath Singh, Government spokesperson and MP from Allahabad West said that the decision was taken to promote the Indian culture with the historic name Prayagraj and also for the promotion of Kumbh Mela which is likely to be held on January 2019.
He said, “I had personally taken up the matter with the governor a few months back and other people, too, had expressed their desire to have the name of Allahabad reverted to its original name of Prayagraj. The cabinet gave unanimous approval to the proposal and the city will now be known as Prayagraj”.
The earlier name Allahabad was given by the emperor Akbar during the 16th century.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited Allahabad on May this year followed by a meeting with the head of Akhil Bhartiya Akhara Parishad who demanded to change the name from Allahabad to Prayagraj and later CM passed a resolution to put it in effect in future.
However, not everyone is satisfied with the decision and consider it as a move to distract the common public from the problems in the city.
